Spice Route


Or the easy way out, to be more specific.

At one teaspoon of mustard and half a teaspoon of cumin, there was no way I could use the grinder to powder this - even my coffee grinders, now defunct, wouldn't have worked. I have a small pestle and mortar but they are very heavy and I didn't feel like washing even the pestle. So I took a napkin, spread the roasted spices on one side, covered it with the rest of the napkin and pounded away at them for a few minutes. This is the second time I'm doing this and it's not a bad idea.

    Arun, you remember! Guess cardamom will be next, thanks to Asha - so far, I've been mashing it with the dal masher on a plate! Still haven't got used to my own idea, you see.

  5. That is clever, though I am wondering why you don't grind more of it in a coffee grinder and keep it in the fridge. At least that's what I do. :)

  6. I too do the napkin trick whenever I get too lazy to wash stuff. Especially when I have to cut sausages along with veggies for breakfast, I get lazy to take two different cutting boards and the sausage gets a napkin. Will try the same for grinding spices too :)

  7. Jaya, I have two coffee grinders, both are defunct, and I haven't found anyone who can repair them despite trying - some part is necessary.
    Sig, I've almost stopped cutting vegs on a cutting board - I feel compelled to wash it every time I take it out of the draw - so what I do is cut them on various plastic plates we usually use in the MW!!!

  8. I have a brass pestle and mortar that I wash only when I pound something like garlic or chili. If it's a dry spice, I don't :), usually just wipe it with a paper towel.
